Berenice was made in October 2020, in the midst of the global pandemic. I knew I wanted to adapt a story by Edgar Allan Poe, in the spirit of the Halloween season, and I knew I would need to make it with just two people on set - myself, and actor Sam Balzac, with whom I was quarantining. Using minimal sets, props, and costumes, and with the bare essentials of equipment, we transformed my small New York City apartment into something that, I hope, creates the atmospheres of a dark and eerie mansion, a claustrophobic library, a lonely graveyard. The limitations of our circumstances formed for me a fascinating challenge, and I believe that the result is a haunting journey into Egaeus's troubled psyche.
Berenice has won for Best Editing in the New York Tri-State Film Festival (September 2021), Honorable Mention for Best Mystery Short in the IndieX Film Fest (December 2020), Finalist for Best Mystery Short in the Indie Short Fest (December 2020), Finalist in the Tokyo International Short Film Festival (2021), and was an Official Selection in the Venice Shorts Film Fest (2020), FlickFair Film Festival (2021), and the New York City Indie Theatre Film Festival (2021). It premiered on March 10th, 2021 in NYCITFF.
